Over time lichen can create the perfect home for moss and algae. These grow in the most impossible places and have been seen growing from rocks, brickwork but most importantly roofs. In bad weather conditions such as icy it will expand these growths and intern cracking tiles. Cracked tiles will cause water seeping through the roof and a compromised strength throughout the roof.
